Supervision of children
Sir, — A Coroner’s report (“The Press,” May 16) said: “No matter how well-fenced a pool is it is only as good as its weakest point, which in this case was the gate.” Although my sympathies are with the parents of the young victims in these cases, the undeniable fact is that the weakest point is not a gate but, parental supervision. There is no circumstance in which adequate surveillance and a secure gate at the child’s home would not only preclude drowning in a neighbouring pool, pond or stream, but would also protect children from being injured on the road, maimed by dogs, or even being abducted. As parents, we must not leave the lives of our children to fortune or the responsibility to others. — Yours, etc., H. HARDING. May 18, 1984.
