DOING AS WE ARE TOLD
WHIM WHAM
What a refractory, recalcitrant, 111-disciplined, disobedient Lot The People of New Zealand are! Will they never appreciate what A talented Bunch their Ministers are, And the thankless Jobs they’ve got? From the Killing Chain to the Surgery, Classroom, Boardroom, Factory Floor, Dissident Voices, mutinous Words— Have we heard them All before? Can we plug our Ears, and close our Minds, Hang PRIVATE on our Door? I found the Minister listening, sadly, To a Tape of his Speech of the previous Day. Round his Desk, all over the Carpet, The daily Papers lay—‘How many Times do I have to tell Them, Before They do as I say?’ Government, isn’t it one of the most Misunderstood and difficult Arts?— Leading the People! But where are We going When the DRIVING starts? The People don’t care for it Much, neither Do Ministers, in their Hearts. No use blaming the Irish, the French, The Russians, Bob Jones, or the SUP. What about all those decent Doctors, Financiers — and Me? In this Free Country, which Minister y Decides, how fee is Free?
