Russian sailor drowns
A Russian fishing trawler Dolomit made an unscheduled call to Lyttelton yesterday, carrying the body of a crew member who drowned at sea on Tuesday. He was Pavel Udovich, aged 49, an electrician.
Mr Udovich drowned after falling off the starboard side of the vessel, where he had been working, said a spokesman for the Christchurch police. The Dolomit was near the Auckland Islands, about 320 km south of Stewart Island, when the accident happened. An inquest was held into the death yesterday.
The Lyttelton police met the Dolomit when she berthed at 9 a.m. yesterday. Mr Udovich’s body, draped in a Russian flag, was brought ashore about 10.30 a.m. and taken to Christchurch Hospital. The body will be taken back to Russia on the trawler Grafit which is due to sail for the port of Nahodka on Monday. The Dolomit, a joint-ven-ture vessel, is expected to return to the fishing grounds today.
