Macho Man bargain $l000 purchase
By
J. J. BOYLE
Macho Man became an almost instant bargain for six Kaikoura railway employees when he won the May Handicap, second leg of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s T.A.B. double and third leg of the T.A.B. treble yesterday. Last week Mr C. C. Mason sold the Rocky Mountain gelding for $lOOO to Messrs Barry Butcher, Eric Lilley, Warren Monogue, Justin Soloman, George Leeming, and Tony Stove.
The six-year-old remained in the Riccarton stable of Joe Shaw, failed at his first start for his new owners in the Amberley Cup, but won decisively in weaker company yesterday, in the hands of the North Island jockey, David Walsh.
As part of his build-up for yesterday’s race Macho Man was schooled over hurdles on Monday, and he might be given racing experience as a jumper before he is much older. Macho Man’s winning share of yesterday’s stake was $2340. David Walsh took close order with Macho Man when Silver Print was taken to the front early, and Paddle dropped into an inside trailing position, an excellent position it seemed, to capitalise on a casual pace. Less well placed until well beyond half way was the favourite, Durack, which
was well down the field. He wound up too late to get within challenging range of Macho Man and Silver Print, up the straight, but he cut into their lead with a long-striding burst of speed close to home. He only missed second by a head, and beat Paddle for third by half a length.
