Start in Northern

By J. J. BOYLE The Washdyke jumper, Sweeney Todd, will be sent north for the Great Northern Steeplechase on June 4.

“He earned his ticket to Ellerslie with that win at Invercargill on Monday, and he has pleased me in the meantime,” Sweeney Todd’s trainer, Pat Corboy, said yesterday.

Corboy said Sweeney Todd’s performance rate over jumps this time around justified a tilt at the big prize in Auckland. “When it is a toss up between a $70,000 race at Ellerslie and a $5OOO race at Wingatui, the answer must be the Great Northern,” Corboy said.

“He made a blunder in the Great Western at Riverton when going well enough to win. But when he has not made a ‘blue’ he has won or run a place. He’s done enough to earn a trip to Auckland.”
