Forest and land use
Sir, — Mr J. C. Halkett, of the New Zealand Forest Service, says that last year timber harvested from indigenous forests in Westland earned $3.6M for taxpayers and $270,000 for local bodies, but he forgot management and production costs of more than S4M. Priceless native trees were destroyed to obtain this money. The tourist industry last year injected into the Westland National Park area $4.2M without the destruction of a single tree or bird. All native forests should be placed under the control of the Minister for the Environment or the Minister of Tourism. Tourism is the fastest-growing industry, with an income of S7SOM last year and prediction of more than SIOOOM within three years, with an extra 20,000 jobs. This is vital for our bankrupt country. To destroy what tourists come to see is sabotage. — Yours, etc., STAN HEMSLEY. May 14, 1984.
