‘Girlie’ calendars

Sir, — The attitude that women’s bodies are public property and that women should be judged in terms of their bodies is the link between pornography and rape. As long as women’s bodies continue to be used to sell everything from toothpaste to cars, and as long as women are expected to live up to unrealistic standards of beauty, women’s bodies will continue to be regarded as public property. My feeling as a woman is that voyeuristic photographs of naked women have little to do with my sexuality but a lot to do with the attitude that women should find all sorts of unwanted male attention acceptable. The public condemnation of “girlie” photographs by the Federation of Labour

may help to make some people aware that women are people — individual human beings, not sex objects. — Yours, etc., T. E. MOON. May 15, 1984.
