PA Auckland Phil Horne, North Shore’s No. 1 badminton player, completed a hat-trick of hat-tricks by winning all three major events in the North Shore open badminton tournament at the week-end. This effort tops off similar wins in the singles, doubles and mixed doubles events at Waitemata and Counties on the previous two week-ends. Horne beat his fellow team member, Kerrin Harrison, in a hard-fought final, after Harrison had beaten the New Zealand No. 1 seed, Graeme Robson, in the semi-finals, in three games, 8-15, 15-10, 15-8. Linda Persson, the top North Shore woman, seeded four for the event, was beaten by the New Zealand No. 1 seed, Toni Whittaker, in the final of the women’s singles, 11-7, 11-5. In the men’s doubles, Home Robson beat their fellow

New Zealand team members, Jacob van Seim and Steven Lobb, in three games, after a shaky start, 9-15, 15-8, 15-5. The second seeds in the women’s doubles. Miss Whittaker and Karen Phillips, headed off Miss Persson and

Alison Sinton, the top seeds, 159, 17-16. The mixed doubles was won by Mrs Sinton and Home, 1512, 15-7, over Lobb and Katrin Lockey. The entry included the members of the South Island touring team which had defeated Counties, 15-1, and narrowly lost, 7-9, to the North Shore side prior to the tournament. The South Island team will, after a short break in the Bay of Islands, play Waitemata and Auckland during the coming few days before departing south to play in the New Zealand invitation singles tournament in Taranaki.
