Mustard wins final

NZPA London The New Zealand Davis Cup squad member, David Mustard, overcame difficult conditions and his own temperament to win the final of the British Lawn Tennis Association’s challenger tournament at Sutton, Surrey, yesterday. Mustard, the sixth seed, defeated the unseeded Briton, Stephen Shaw 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 to claim £3378 (about SNZ72OO). But early in the game he appeared headed for defeat as he struggled to master a loose surface and strong wind.

That, combined with meticulous play by Shaw, induced shouts ana behaviour from Mustard which culminated in a public warning for “abusing the ball.” Following two disputes with the umpire, a difficult bounce caused the New Zealand lefthander to shriek: “The court’s a sandpit.” It was only at 2-4 down in the second set that Mustard gained self control and settled down to varied, effective tactics which showed why he is over 200 places above Shaw’s world computer ranking of 389.
