More farms, fewer sheep
PA Wellington New Zealand has more farms now than it had two years ago. Results from the Statistics Department’s agriculture census for the year ended June, 1983, showed there was a total of 75,745 farms, compared with 73,925 a year earlier. The census covered all areas of land which were used or were potentially usable for livestock, cropping, horticulture, vegetable and poultry production, or forestry. Sheep numbers dropped slightly for the first time since 1975 from 70,301,000 in 1982, to 70,263,000 last year. The country also has more than three million dairy cattle and 408,000 pigs.
