Mr Derek Quigley
Sir,—Elizabeth White criticises Derek Quigley for his occasional independent outbursts against the Prime Minister and the socialist leanings of the National Party. She puts party loyalty before individual conscience and so endorses the attitude that has made such a mess of New Zealand politics. To me, a member of Parliament should be elected to do what he or she sees as correct and in the best interests of his or her electorate. He or she should be independent and not concerned with behind-the-scene deals or pandering to party unity. Mr Quigley should be chastised, not for his independence and outspokenness, but for the rarity of it — Yours, etc., R. P. RITCHIE. May 10, 1984.
