Agent Orange victims
Sir,—The Government shows insensitivity to the plight of New Zealanders by giving the cold shoulder to any inquiry regarding the health problems suffered by Vietnam veterans. Even though the American firms that manufactured Agent Orange have admitted their liability, this does not give the Government the right to opt out of its responsibility, for it was the previous National Government that sent troops to fight in Vietnam. There are some members who were in Parliament when the decision was made to send those troops. It would be sad if they did not stand up to this latest Government move. One hopes that the Ministers of Finance and Social Welfare will not impose any impositions or restrictions on any of the recipients of the damages awarded, for the Government has done little to help the veterans of these latter-day battles.—Yours, etc., PETER W. KENNEDY. May 9, 1984.
