Ramphal asked to make appeal

NZPA London The Commonwealth Secretary-General, Sir Shri’dath Ramphal, has been asked to make an urgent appeal to the English Rugby Football Union to call off its tour of South Africa. The request came from the Commonwealth Southern Africa Committee at its meeting in London yesterday. The committee comprises heads of Commonwealth missions in London. The committee strongly deplored the Rugby Foot-

ball Union’s decision to tour South Africa in the face of appeals by the British and other Commonwealth governments and sports bodies, a statement after the meeting said. The tour was being made in “blatant disregard” of its consequences for the international campaign against apartheid. It flouted the objectives of the Gleneagles agreement and was likely to have serious implications for commonwealth and international sport, the statement said.
