Babies of women prisoners

Sir,—ln the article on May 2, “Babies behind bars,” Mr Bob Williams, the Assistant Secretary for Justice, Penal Institutions, said that the New Zealand justice system does not allow mothers to have their children in prison. He justified this by saying that New Zealand does not have a perfect solution, but it is a good one, given the small number of women involved in New Zealand. The first few years of a child’s development are of great importance and the mother-child bonding is developed during these years. Prison is a punishment, but should the system also punish innocent children by separating them from their mothers? Convicted women should have the right to choose whether to keep their babies with them or not!—Yours, etc., G. N. LOUW. May 5, 1984.
