Mutton stocks
Sir,— Wilkie Wallace’s letter on New Zealand mutton that cannot be sold but “could be given to Third World countries if transport were available” deserves thoughtful consideration. The Christian ship, the Anastasis, provides a precedent that New Zealand could well copy. Could we not devote a telethon to raising money to buy a refrigerated ship to take meat to those of the poor who are suffering from protein deficiency? As long as we continue trying to sell much of our farm produce to those who do not need it, and make inadequate attempts to build trade with poorer countries, the problem of an unsaleable farm surplus will remain with us. The kind of charity ship that I propose, if it also carried enough commercial freight to cover running costs, might pave the way for profitable trade to areas now considered unprofitable—Yours, etc., MARK D. SADLER. May 7, 1984.
