Food prices drop
The Dominican Republic’s Government, in an attempt to avoid further angry outbursts against its austerity measures, had established markets with cheaper food in several of the poorer areas. Recently the Government’s austerity measures sent food prices up by 50 per cent and caused widespread riots, during which at least 55 people were killed. The island’s food prices were increased after the International Monetary Fund insisted this be done as a precondition for renewing a $450 million loanSanto Domingo.
