Sexist course titles changed

NZPA-AP Lawrence, Kansas Affirmative Action officials at the University of Kansas have launched a search through the school catalogue for course titles that are sexist. As a result, the university this autumn will rename courses titled “Molecules and Man” and “Earthquakes and Man.” The titles undermine women’s contributions to science, according to Ms Robbi Ferron, the Affirmative Action director. The courses will be renamed “Molecules and Life” and “Earthquakes and Society.” In addition, all generic references to he, his and man will disappear from the school’s undergraduate catalogue, which lists course titles and descriptions. The changes already have been made in the graduate catalogue. The changes will bring the university in line with its Affirmative Action plan adopted in 1977 to satisfy Federal equal

requirements, said Ms Ferron. The chairman of the geology department, Mr Ernest Angino, said, “I think it’s ridiculous. “English is a genderbased language, and if this is offensive, then some of these people should learn a non-gender-based language like Chinese or Turkish.”
