‘Minister shuts door’

The Social Credit education spokesman, Mr Richard Bach, has accused the Minister of Education, Mr Wellington, of shutting the door on reasonable discussion on social studies syllabus changes. No social studies teacher or teacher organisation was opposed to change, Mr Bach said, but they were opposed to the way the Minister had gone about it.

“The 25 members of the hand-picked consultative committee on the social studies syllabus were all hand-picked unknowns,” he said. “The group of four experienced social studies

teachers — those are the Minister’s words — consisted of a secondary principal and deputy principal, who are not active in the field, while the two primary teachers were likewise not representative of their sector of the profession.” The committee members had also been inadequately briefed, Mr Bach said. Social studies teachers had been promised that they would see the social studies survey done only when the Waikato Social Studies Teachers’ Association had threatened to invoke the Official Information Act, he said.
