Close tussle goes to Harewood

Harewood took a further two points in the N.Z, Permanent Building Society’s senior women’s hockey competition from its match against Pegasus on Saturday, but the points were not won easily. Pegasus could even regard the game as a moral victory, for the only goal against it was awarded in a decision disputed by the Pegasus defenders. Lyn Schulz, the Harewood captain, did well to get the ball across field to Linda Bowie, but before the ball was in the goal the circle was congested with players from both sides, and it appeared that Lesley Murdoch, the Pegasus goal-keeper, was obstructed. Twice Pegasus appeared odds-on to score and failed. The first instance was in the first half, when Lyn Riesterer stopped a ball from a penalty comer hit, timed her shot to perfection and then heard the umpire’s whistle go; and the second was during the dying moments of the match. Cheryl O’Rourke broke down the left flank and angled a pass for her fellow forwards to run on to with Harewood’s goal seemingly exposed. Elaine Jensen, the keeper, got her stick to the ball, but Pegasus was ruled offside, and the chance was lost. Riesterer, at centre-half, was one of the chief motivators of the Pegasus team, and her role became increasingly important during the second half. She was instrumental in getting some long passes through to Kim Hook in the centre of the front-line, and when O’Rourke was included in the movement, the team looked capable of matching Harewood’s score. However, Pegasus sometimes created problems of its own. In the bid to get as many players as possible on attack, it was pulled up for offside. If Harewood nad an edge it was in the ability of its top forwards, and Maree Flannery in particular, to make quick breaks away from the opposition. Flannery relished her role on the right wing, replacing Nicky Scott, who played in the

area under-21 tournament at Darfield. In partnership with Henrietta Carroll ana Cindy Smith, Flannery moved quickly to any loose ball, and stepped deftly out of several tackles. With such a capable defence as Harewood’s, it would have been tempting to sit back once the initial goal was scored and wait for Pegasus to make errors. However, although the match became scrappy near the end, both sides aid their share of attacking and were fairly evenly matched. In the only other senior match, Rangiora and Lincoln College, two of the lowerplaced teams, drew, 2-2. Lincoln College had led at the turn by the two goals. The Carlton-Burnside and Woolston-Selwyn matches were deferred because of the A.N.Z. area under-21 tournament at Darfield. Scores and scorers: Senior A: Harewood 1 (L. Bowie), Pegasus 0.
