Captain sent off
A senior rugby captain was both sin-binned and ordered off in a competition match on Saturday, and a _ former senior captain was • dispatched to the sin bin for ’ back-chatting the referee. Both unusual incidents •’ came on a day when more -,; bad feeling than usual rose to the surface.
The Hornby lock and captain, Gordon Gossett, was sent to the sin bin in the . match against Belfast after * apparently talking back to •< the referee, Mr M. L. , Fitzgibbon. As Gossett was • recalled to the field there was a further incident, and Gossett was sent off for - what Mr Fitzgibbon des- I cribed after the match as ■ “misconduct.” Another lock and former . University captain, lan Stewart, was sent to the sin •> bin for talking back to the * referee, Mr D. J. Winton, at a late stage in the Ham >• field.
Grant James, the Albion •• full-back, was sent off by Mr H. R. Catherwood for making a,late charge.
Besides Gossett and Stew-.. art, other players sent to ' the sin bin were Les Piggott , (Belfast), Greg Sparrow (Old Boys), Kelvin Mariu (Lyttelton), Chris Langsdale ; (Albion), and Peter Johnson : (Merivale-Papanui). ->
