Cancer scare for Coe

NZPA-AAP London The world middle distance running star, Sebastian Coe, has revealed he had endured a cancer scare. The Daily Mail said the scare happened last year when a mystery illness kept the Olympic gold medalist and world record holder, off the track for five months. Doctors warned that some of the symptoms indicated leukaemia and Coe had to wait a fortnight for tests to be analysed. Then a rare blood disease was blamed and his pet dog Cloe

was suspected as the source of the illness. “She passed the tests so it could have been something I picked up from contaminated water or meat when I was training in Italy,” said Coe. “It was a relief to have a diagnosis so quickly. I was very aware of the possibility of cancer. It did give me a fright.” Coe hopes he has been cured of the blood disorder but he will have regular checks up to July’s Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
