Craft to be launched
H.M.N.Z.S. Kiwi, the Christchurch naval reserve unit’s new craft, will be launched at Whangarei on Monday. The 28-metre craft, built by Whangarei Engineering and Construction, Ltd, wifi be launched by Mrs Antoinette Steward, wife of the Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral C. J. Steward. H.M.N.Z.S. Pegasus, the Christchurch unit of the Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve, will use the craft for a variety of tasks, including seamanship training. The new craft is the second of four vessels being built for the R.N.Z.N.V.R. - the first was launched in the middle of last year and the remaining two are expected to follow at six-month intervals. They are the same basic design as the two Whangarei-built inshore survey craft in use with the Navy’s hydrographic service. Naval reservists <yt from H.M.N.Z.S. Pegasus will
travel to Auckland to gain experience on the craft as she goes through trials, working up and maintenance. The craft will be officially commissioned on June 26 and is expected to arrive at Lyttelton about August 12,
