Butter rises 14c
PA Wellington A 500 g pack of butter will rise 14c from today. The Trade and Industry Department has approved the increase — the first since December, 1981. The increase will partly reduce the annual deficit of nearly $25 million which the Dairy Board now incurred on butter sold in New Zealand, said the board’s general manager, Mr I. M. Willetts. Even with the increased price the board would still subsidise local market sales by about ?14 million, he said. “The New Zealand consumer will still enjoy the
cheapest butter in the world. It is expected that many major retailers will continue to discount below the approved maximum retail price which has been increased from $l.lO to $1.24.” The board’s recently released Mountain Maid “Continental Style” butter is not subject to the rise.
