New marathon course
Runners in this year’s Adidas City of Christchurch marathon 'and halfmarathon will start from Ascot Avenue instead of from Queen Elizabeth II Park stadium. The organisers hope that the change of starting place, and a simplified finishing arrangement, will prevent any recurrence of the problem experienced by halfmarathon runners last year, who covered an extra 400 m because of some confusion over the number of laps they were supposed to run in the stadium at the start, and the finish.
Last year 2000 entered the marathon and 2000 entered the half-marathon. Greater entries are expected this year, but entries will not be accepted after Monday, May 7. The races will be held on June 3. At the finish this year marathon runners will turn right as they come into the stadium and finish a short distance down the track on the normal finish line. Halfmarathon runners will turn left in the stadium and finish down the back straight at a point level with the marathon finish.
