Crowe’s century

NZPA-Reuter London Martin Crowe, the New Zealand cricket player, made his debut century for the English county Somerset, yesterday.

Crowe, in his first season of county cricket, finished with an unbeaten 100 as Somerset made merry with the Oxford University attack.

Two other Somerset batsmen, Peter Roebuck and Julian Wyatt, made centuries before Somerset’s innings was declared at 365 for one. By stumps, Oxford was 53/2.

In other matches, the champions Essex found the going much tougher against Kent. After crushing Hampshire in their opening game, Essex travelled to Canterbury and were dismissed for a modest 202.

Surrey recovered at the Oval, and the former captain, Roger Knight (87) and the Guyana-born Monte Lynch (60), added 132 for the fourth wicket against Northamptonshire after Surrey had struggled to 47 for three. The home side eventually declared at 318 for seven.
