Kamikaze tactics fail for Hughes
NZPA-AAP Sydney Geoff Molloy from Victoria, won the Westfield Melboume-to-Sydney supermarathon yesterday finishing ahead of the gallant New Zealander, John Hughes. The 51-year-old Auckland detective battled Molloy for the lead for most of Wednesday and yesterday and at one stage was only about seven kilometres behind Molloy. As he crossed the line at Parramatta, Hughes was given a bear hug by Molloy who completed the 875 km race in six days, four hours,
two minutes. Hughes said his performance was not as good as he expected and he thought he would catch Molloy yesterday. Looking exhausted Hughes said the hot conditions yesterday and his kamikaze tactics had taken their toll. Hughes collected sAustsooo (SNZ7OOO) for his effort. Bob Telfer is the next competitor expected to cross the line. He is about 60km back in the field. Last year’s marathon hero, Cliff Young, is still shuffling along in eighth position, 100 km off the lead.
The supermarathon ended on a sour note with allegations of cheating against one of the competitors. The race director, Mike Agostini, said a competitor, Bob Bruner, currently in fifth place, was still running knowing there were several reports about him contravening the rules. He said Bruner also knew that disqualification was imminent if they were proved true. Agostini said Bruner was offered the chance to withdraw, but chose to run on. If he finishes, he will be presented with the allegations and given a chance to reply.
