Charles Luca may represent N.Z.

By JEFF SCOTT The former Southland pacer, Charles Luca, is likely to represent New Zealand in the World Cup Pacing Championship at the Meadowlands next month, according to the Australia and New Zealand agent for the series, Mr Bob McArdle, of Christchurch. Charles Luca, which took a Imin 56.8 s record at the Meadowlands last year, won a $35,000 free-for-all at the Meadowlands mile track in New Jersey last Saturday in Imin 55.45, his second win in four starts in his latest campaign. Mr McArdle had negotiated for the dual InterDominion champion, Gammalite, to represent Australia in the World Cup series. However, this has now fallen through. Gammalite’s ownertrainer, Leo O’Connor, suffered a broken arm recently and has since decided against the trip. Double Deck, which won three races as a two-year-old at Addington for the Belfast trainer, John Thompson, returned a personal best of Imin 57.1 s when he won at the Meadowlands last week, while Family Fun, a useful winner for Gem Scott at Halswell, recorded the same time when also successful at the Meadowlands. Patty Bromac, thejwinner

of two races from Reg Curtin’s Christchurch stable last season, was a winner at Freehold, a half-mile track, in 2min I.ls, while the former North Island pacer. Skipper Ben, won in Imin 56.6 s at the Meadowlands.
