Mururoa report in July

PA Auckland The analysis of geological samples from the French nuclear testing site at Mururoa by Australian and New Zealand scientists is not expected to be finished until July. The director of New Zealand’s National Radiation Laboratory, Mr Andrew McEwan, said yesterday that a review of material would be made next month and a report forwarded on the findings in July.

Mr McEwan said New Zealand scientists completed an analysis of

samples they had brought back in January, and an Australian scientist involved in the project visited Paris in early April to look at other samples. The French Government gave permission for scientists from Australia, New Zealand, and one from Papua New Guinea to visit Mururoa in October last year to check on the environmental effects of nuclear testing. They spent four days on the atoll and will produce a joint report on their findings.
