Big beef yarding brings price drop

Beef prices eased at least $2O a head at the Addington market yesterday. The drop was caused by a big yarding of cattle and a recent reduction in the beef export schedule price. Prices for prime lambs also dropped because of a big yarding. Hoggets and old ewes remained steady. Prime lambs In spite of a $2 easing in price by the end of the sale, prime lambs had a satisfactory market. The yarding of 3822 was the highest for the season, exceeding the previous market’s total by 700. The sale started slightly below recent rates and gradually lost ground because of the sheer weight of numbers. Light lambs sold at schedule rates, after having made above schedule for several weeks. Fat pigs A medium-sized yarding of fat pigs had a difficult sale. Quality was poor and only odd pens were suitable for the retail trade. The best quality porkers met with the best demand. A big yarding of choppers sold well. Few heavy pigs were offered and good cutting pigs were in keen demand. Values were:— Light pork, $BO to $B7. Medium to heavy pork, $9O to $lO5. Light to medium bacon, $lOB to $llB. Heavy bacon, to $l4O. Heavy choppers, $l5O to $l7O. Light choppers, $l2O to $145. Store pigs Competition from outside buyers led to a good sale for store pigs, particularly big stores, most of which sold for over $6O. Small weaners did not meet with the same demand, although prices were similar to those paid at the last sale. Well presented pigs in all classes had a strong sale. Demand for breeding stock was not as strong as recent sales. Good in-pig sows sold to $290 and a sow and litter of nine made $340. Values were:— Small weaners, $32 to $37. Good weaners, $4O to $45.
