Legal action by Aboriginals?
NZPA-AAP Adelaide The Aboriginal Legal Rights Movement has threatened legal action against the British and Australian governments over the Maralinga atomic tests in South Australia’s far north-west. A spokesman for the movement said the decision came after the failure of the British High Commissioner, Sir John Mason, and the Federal Government to agree to meet representatives of the movement in Canberra. The action for damages would be taken on behalf of the Yalata Aboriginal community who had been dispossessed as a result of
the bomb tests, the spokesman said. He said some members of the community were affected physically by the tests, which occurred during the 1950 s and 19605. The spokesman said the movement would like to meet representatives of both governments and reach a settlement. If that could not be done it would go ahead with the action. However, he said there was so little information available about the tests that they would have Jo wait to see if the South Australian Government could obtain any more in its latest appeal to the British authorities.
