Johnny Courtell wins
Johnny Courtell suggested that he might not be long returning to winning form when he was successful at the work-outs held at Rangiora Raceway on Sunday. Johnny Courtell was not pushed over the final stages to get up and shade Zebec, also under restraint at the line, at the end of 2600 m in 3min 37.95, with the last 800 m in Imin 4.55, and the final 400 m in 32.55. Pitcher
did well for a three-year-old to hold third, just ahead of Impulse. Times throughout the day were slow as the track was on the dead side. Ansett, still last near the straight entrance, came fast to beat Boyden Lad by half a length in 3min 38.85, with the final 400 m in 295. She is in great order.
Corrigan, handy all the way, battled on to shade Rare Treat for third. Lightning Bolt (3min 34.55), Knowing Light (3min 35.15), Saraband Lad (3min 49.45) and Castle Prince (3min 40.35) were other winners over 2600 m. Ashley Globe (3min 4.85) and Jessie James (3min 9.25) won the heats for two-year-olds run over 2200 m.
