A title for women

Sir,—Although more and more women are presiding over meetings at various levels, none seem to have determined an appropriate way by which they should be addressed. Madam chairman is two contradictary words. A recent female visitor held the title of Lord Mayor of Adelaide. Lady Lord? Wow. People learning our language must feel we have no knowledge of gender. I suggest the word chairman be deleted from our vocabulary and replaced by president, which describes the occupation at the time and may be preceded by either Mr, Ms, Mrs, or Madam without embarrassment. — Yours, etc., C. C. HOLLAND. April 25, 1984.
