Smoking
Sir,—Russell Baker writes in a satirical manner on smoking and of the campaigners against tobacco. It is strange, considering the stupidity of the smoking habit, that there are few satirists willing to use their skills to help the nonsmoking lobby. I guess satirists have to distance themselves from the realities of the public health message to curry favour with those wanting a laugh. The fact is that many people are made seriously ill by having to endure the tobacco smoke from others, and there are others just as concerned for the health of their loved ones who take up the habit of smoking as teenagers. — Yours, etc., P. V. NEARY, Honorary Secretary, N.Z. Clean Air Society. April 26, 1984.
