NZPA-AAP Sydney The failure of the Eclipse One well to encounter hydrocarbons and the weakness of the world copper price eroded market confidence in dull trading on Australian stock exchanges yesterday. At the close, the all-ordin-aries index was down 6.2 points at 752.9, the all-industri-als index was down 1.6 points at 993.6, and the all-resources index was 9.6 points lower at 562.1. The main falls among Eclipse partners were BHP, 25c to 1110, Weeks Petroleum, down 30c to 520, and Weeks Australia, down 7c at 156. Consolidated Petroleum lost 5c to 73. and among its associated companies, Hartogen lost 10c to 300 and Genoa fell 5c to 145. Among other oil and gas issues, Santos fell 14c to 676 and Bridge fell 5c to 275. Gold stocks weakened with Central Norseman down 20c at 610, Poseidon down 10c at 480 and Peko down 14c at 510. Uranium issues retreated while coals were narrowly higher.
CSR dropped 4c to 368. ANZ rose 2c to 568 while other banks held steady. Coles lost 5c to 373 but Myer rose 2c to 198 on light volume. Mayne Nickless fell 5c to 250 while Brambles gained 5c to 290. Bundaberg Sugar at 270 and Rothmans 860, were down 10c, while ICI firmed 5c to 220.
