School destroyed by fire

PA New Plymouth Fire engulfed and destroyed the Stanley Road primary school at Midhirst, skm north of Stratford, yesterday. The Stratford volunteeer fire brigade arrived on the scene about 5 p.m. and took 20 minutes to bring the blaze under control, said Chief Fire Officer John Buckley. Two firemen were taken to Stratford Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. They were treated and discharged. The school committee chairman, Mr Keith Hosking, said it seemed nothing could be saved from the library, two classrooms, toilets and staff block. The headmaster, Mr John Bigwood, said it appeared the blaze was caused by an electrical fault. He said the school’s 38 pupils would be back on Monday, using a local hall as a classroom.
