Humphrey Finney dead
By J. J. BOYLE Humphrey S. Finney, an elder statesman of racing and breeding in America, died recently at his home in Kentucky at the age of 81. He had suffered from a heart condition for several years. Mr Finney was a popular visitor to New Zealand in the 1950 s and 19605. One of his visits for the Trentham sales allowed him to see Great Sensation in one of his Wellington Cup triumphs. That victory left Mr Finney highly enthusiastic, and inspired his comment: “New Zealand is the last bastion of the stayer." As chairman of FasigTipton Co. Inc., he served international racing and breeding loyally and skilfully for almost half a century. The sales ring pavilion at Saratoga bears his name. Mr Finney was also an associate director of the British Bloodstock Agency.
