Trotting filly impresses

Special correspondent Dunedin

Beau’s Delight, the three-year-old filly trotter, provided the highlight of the Forbury Park trials on Tuesday when she beat the CO pacers.

Beau’s Delight, a candidate for Saturday’s New Zealand Trotting Stakes, was sent against the pacers when she was left as the only runner in a heat for trotters.

She began quickly from the outside of the nine-horse field and made the pace. She was challenged at the 1400 m and the 500 m, but held her ground with a faultless display and won by a length-and-a-half under a hold.

Her time of 3min 36.4 s (2:13.9 mile rate) for the 2600 m compared with 3min 39.6 s by the other CO heat winner. Her trainer, Ali Malcolmson, who drives her on Saturday, considers she is better now than when she raced at Addington last month. She ran wide when near the lead on the last lap which could be attributed to inexperience. She has since won at Winton in New Zealand record time for a three-year-old filly. A member of Jim Dalgety’s Kakanui stable, Red General, ran on boldly after trailing handy on the outer

and he held off the fastfinishing Shrewdie by a neck. Shrewdie will not be a forlorn chance in the Georges’ Pace at Invercargill on Saturday.

Winfield Kai, which is also engaged at Addington on Saturday, overcame a 70m handicap to win his heat. He improved from the 600 m and won easily by a length from the fast-finish-ing Imperial Hanover which was four back on the inner, with half a length to Royal Knight, which trailed the pacemaker, Kadavan. Winfield Kai ran the 2600 m in 3min 28.35.

Leanne Bogart was the fastest of four pacers to qualify. Her time was 3min 15.95, 3.1 s inside the required time. She is a four-year-old mare by Bogart Hanover from Avis Hanover, trained by Craig Buchan.
