NZPA-AAP Sydney A further bout of buying from the United States saw industrial issues firm on Australian stock exchanges yesterday while metal stocks retreated over all on easier physical prices. The all ordinaries index was down 0.6 at 754.9. The all industrials was up 2.2 at 978.5 and the all resources off 2.8 at 576.9. BHP recovered in afternoon trading to close steady at 1450. CRA fell 10c to 596, MIM lost 3c to 355 and Renison fell 5c to 375 while WMC at 428, EZ Industries at 530, Bougainville at 268 and Seitrust at 98 were steady. Gold stocks were mixed with Central Norseman down 10c at 600 but Emperor up 15c at 410 and Poseidon up 5c at 490. Uranium stocks were weak with Pancontinental down 8c at 127. Santos opened weakly on news of a one-for-four rights issue at 400 but firmed to close 8c down at 708. Brokers attributed the rise in some other oil and gas issues to investors speculating that Santos will use the funds for a take-over. Bridge rose 15c to 310 while 5c rises took Vamgas to 350 and Crusader to 325. CSR fell. 6c to 376. Banks were mixed with Westpac up 5c at 390 and ANZ down 4c at 556, while National lost 3c to 355. Transport stocks were strong with Brambles up 5c at 280 while 3c rises took TNT to 188 and Mayne Nickless to 238. Retailers were mixed with Coles down 5c at 365.
