Robot technology

Sir,—An article from “The Economist” on April 3 asks how bosses can counter workers’ fear and mistrust of modern robot technology which does away with direct human labour power on a large scale. The response to this by two American academics—Fred Foulks and Jeffrey Hirsch—was that there would be less resistance if “rotten” jobs were automated first and if employees were given earlier warning of impending change and helped to make that change as smoothly as possible. It is time the workers stopped pussyfooting and enacted a legal revolution at the ballot box to elect candidates pledged to transfer ownership and control of the forces of production to the working class. When both producers and consumers own and control production, the distinction between employee and employer will be abolished and the new age will be here.—Yours, etc., TED HICKS. April 6, 1984.
