More marriages hold

PA Wellington Marriage dissolutions and divorces were well down last year, Statistics Department figures show. Marriage break-ups fell 21 per cent from 12,395 in 1982 to 9750 last year. A departmental spokesman suggested that dissolutions might have peaked in 1982 with the introduction of “irretrievable breakdown” as ground for divorce. Last year 9528 couples cited irretrievable breakdown of their marriage as ground.

Other grounds were adultery (46 marriages), desertion (four), separation agreement (96), separation by court order (41), and having lived apart for four years or more (30). Marriages of five to nine years duration — 2646 of them — were the biggest group. Marriages of 40 years or more ended for 68 couples, and for 838 couples, marriages of less than five years. There were 11,706 children affected by divorce and dissolution in 1983.
