‘No justification’ for price claim

The furniture manufacturers’ spokesman, Mr Graeme Morgan, says he does not want to hear any more talk of a 20 per cent increase in furniture prices without evidence to back it

up. Investigations by the Furniture Manufactuers’ Federation, Mr Morgan says, have uncovered nothing to substantiate a claim of 10 to 20 per cent increases made by the retailers’ spokesman, Mr Don Lee.

Increases arising from in-

creases in timber and other prices were mainly between 7 and 9 per cent, he said. An isolated case of 12 per cent was found.

“Every pressure group with an axe to grind is climbing on Mr Lee’s bandwaggon when we can find no justification for the original figures.” Considering the present level of competition in the furniture industry, it would be self-defeating for any manufacturer to try to increase prices more than cost increases justified.
