Axemen’s events
Axemen turned out in force for chopping and sawing events held in appalling conditions at the Methven Show on Saturday, but they finally had to give the conditions best. For a period it seemed they were going to ignore the elements, but conditions underfoot were anything but ideal for standing chops in particular — and it was significant that three sawing events were cancelled. An unusual event was the axe-throwing, won by probably the veteran of the field, a Washdyke sawmill owner, Norman Wilson, with Geoff Hocquard (Marlborough) second, D. Evans (West Coast) third. The Curtain Cup relay was won by Canterbury with its team J. Patterson, L. Gilsenan, R. Bowen, G. Mannering, R. Dickson, and R. Thain. The championship doublehanded sawing went to Bill and Jo Curtain, with Ross Spicer and Jack Patterson second, and J. Hunt and Hocquard third. Other results were: 250 mm standing: J. Patterson (Aorangi) 1, A. Gilsenan (North Canterbury) 2, G. Hateley (Buller) 3. 300 mm standing: D. Wellington (Aorangi) 1, R. Molloy (Ferrymead) 2, B. Smith (Buller) 3. 300 mm underhand: A. Smith 1, C. Cox (Aorangi) 2, A. Cox (Aorangi) 3. 350 mm underhand: D. Laurie (Aorangi) 1, D. Seymour (Ferrymead) 2. Williams (Buller) 3. Restricted standing: R. Geddes (Aorangi) 1, John Lee (Buller) 2, Jack Sloper (MidCanterbury) 3. Underhand: R. Tyler (Buller) 1, J. Lee (Buller) 2, Dennis Sloper (Mid-Canterbury) 3.
