Methven Show events spoilt by heavy rain

Rain had the final say at the Methven Agricultural and Pastoral Association show on Saturday when it forced the cancellation of the grand parade and shortened other events.

Two weeks of hard work by officials seemed threatened on Friday when the Methven area suffered one of the heaviest downpours of rain for a very long time. Farmers claimed they measured between 50mm and 100 mm of rain overnight.

The district showed it, some roads suffering minor flooding and all ground becoming waterlogged. The Methven show grounds were no exception and it was remarkable that officials got as far through the programme as they did.

Axemen came from all over Canterbury, the West Coast, and Buller and started their events early. They completed some in pouring rain and finally cancelled three sawing events.

In the main ring, jumping events suffered through uncertain footing on take-offs and refusals were more than usual. The driving rain doubtlesss hindered! other combinations. The sideshows did relatively little business. It was no day for children to have fun, yet they were still present in number.

The association’s secretary, Mr K. W. Richardson, was quite pleased with gatfctakings of s2s2l.They compared well with the $4370 taken on a fine day last year. It was 14 years since Methven had last suffered interference to its pro-

gramme from the weather, Mr Richardson said. Judges were generally high in their praise of stock offered and were all enthusiastic about animals they considered the champions of their breeds.
