High jumper retains N.Z. title

PA Auckland Otago’s Trudy Painter retained her national women’s high jump title on the first day of the national track and field championships at Mount Smart yesterday. Painter took the honours with a I.Blm leap, but failed narrowly in three attempts to better Claire Ryan’s national record of 1.83 m when she missed at 1.84 m. Glenys Kroon, of Auckland, won the inaugural women’s 10,000 m. Content to run fourth behind the early pacemaker, Karen Petley, for the first

half of the race, Kroon moved into second behind Wendy Renner three laps from the finish and sprinted to the lead at the bell to win easily. Her time was 35min 15.885. Earlier in the day, Mark Nua had retained his junior shot put title with a throw of 15.63 m, an improvement of 69cm on last year’s winning effort. The 800 m heats indicated that most events at these championships will be closely contested. The three heat winners were only 0.15 s apart, with Peter Mcßedmond

(W.C.N.1.) recording the fastest time of Imin 52.825, ahead of his team-mate, Russell Aldridge (Imin 52.865). The third heat winner, Peter Williams, of Canterbury, finished in Imin 52.975. Lesley Croxton, of Auckland, remained on target to retain her 800 m title, winning the second heat in 2min 8.945. A Polish runner, Jolanta Januchta, had recorded 2min 6.79 s to win the first heat. Phillip Mills (Auckland) was the fastest qualifier (53.375) in the men’s 400 m hurdles and his battle with

the titleholder, Wayne Paul (the winner of the second heat) and a fellow Cantabrian, Murray Cumberpatch, today promises to be one of the highlights of the threeday meeting. The women’s javelin was dominated by two New Caledonian visitors, A. Tulitau and K. Filikesa, who recorded the best throws of 46.48 m and 46.32 m respectively. Jan Bishop, of Canterbury, retained her title with a throw of 44.66 m, with her team-mates, Lyn Aben, second with 41.40 m and a former champion, Sally

Mene, third with 41.34 m. Murray Day, of Taranaki, was outstanding in the junior men’s 10km track walk, leading from start to finish to win in 46min 43.675, almost four minutes ahead of Chris Hayes (Auckland).
