Test play abandoned
NZPA Asgiriya; Sri Lankar Heavy rain washed out any chance of play on the first day yesterday of the first cricket test between New Zealand and Sri Lanka. Play was officially abandoned for the day shortly after the scheduled lunch break.
New Zealand did not name a twelve, even after viewing the wicket, which
appeared slow and flat. z The experienced Sri Lankan batsman, Roy Dias, did not pass a fitness test and was omitted from Sri Lanka’s XI. His place was taken by the batsman and slow right-arm spinner, S. Kaluperuma. The 12th man in the Sri Lankan side was the uncapped left-arm off-spinner, J. Amerasinghe.
