Central’s big task

PA Invercargill Central Districts now face a huge task if they are to deprive Canterbury of the Shell Trophy. Central needs to beat Otago to have a chance of the trophy but Otago’s batting yesterday on the second day (thanks to rain, effectively the first) means Central has a tough task. When play eventually began at 2 p.m., Central Districts surprised by putting Otago in to bat. Otago reached 178 for nine after a one-day start from Stu McCullum. He and Ken Rutherford scored at the rate of four runs an over with Gary Rutherford in particular coming in for a hard time.

Tea was taken with Otago on 104 for five and Otago reached 178 for nine when
