Life injected

PA Wellington The rival captains, Ervin McSweenCy, of Wellinton, and John Parker, of Northern Districts, did their best to inject some life into an ailing Shell Trophy cricket match at the Basin Reserve yesterday. After rain interrupted the second day’s play even more than the first, McSweeney declared Wellington’s first innings closed at the overnight score of 83 for one.

Northern started batting at 4.30 p.m. and in 81 minutes was 85 for two.

Having secured four points for a first innings lead, its first since the opening round before Christmas, Parker declared. For the last 20 minutes of the Northern innings the light had been poor but the visitors, intent on ending their points drought, made no appeal. By the time Wellington

was due to start its second innings at 6 p.m; the light had not improved and play ceased.

In yesterday’s 81 minutes play, Northern’s opener, Lindsay Crocker, scored 30 before falling lbw to Steve Maguiness. With Chris Kuggeleijn he put on 49 for the second wicket. Later Kuggeleijn continued to punish the bowlers, reaching 47 from 61 balls before the declaration.
