Women bus drivers permitted shorts
PA Auckland Women bus drivers have won their Cght to wear men’s shorts on the job. The Auckland Regional Authority’s passenger services committee has voted to allow them to weather either skirts, long trousers or the men’s shorts. The committee was at first concerned a concession would cost more money in the annual uniforms, budget, which this year stood at iikM . . ;. But the A.R.A.’s a bus manager, <Mr Ron. Shearer, said the shorts would' be phased part 'ofjithe wdqfen’s general uniform,
replacement and would not cost any more because they were straight off the men’s peg. Women drivers who arrived for work wearing shorts last week were sent home because their uniform broke the rules. They laid a complaint with the Human Rights Commission but any investigation by it now seems unlikely. The decision to allow women to wear shorts brings the A.R.A. into line with, the Wellington buses whose women drivers have been allowed shorts for, some time.
