Hanami Ensemble

This ensemble is a New Zealand group, comprising Jonathan Crawford (koto), Miki Sato (koto and shamisen), Judith Exley (shakuhachi), and Maureen Heffernan (koto and voice). Their programme focused on modern compositions and settings of popular songs, preserving links

past through the use of different tuning systems and scales. It was a welcome addition to the Festival but one almost missed because of an incorrect performance time on the reviewer’s tickets.

The second half of the concert highlighted the koto, showing its extreme sensitivity in solo works and the rich, complex effect of several koto playing together. Ensemble playing was secure and balanced. When added, the voice brought a gentle contrast to the nasal plucked instruments.

It is hoped that the Well-ington-based ensemble will soon return for a second coneertp
