Retailers urged to haggle
PA Wellington Retailers should haggle down manufacturers’ prices and lower their own profit expectations, said the president of the Retailers’ Federation, Mr lan Halsted, yesterday. Retailers had a duty to stand up to manufacturers who went for substantial price rises, he said when addressing the federation’s annual conference in Ashburton. “We can haggle and shop around. Our customers have shown the way,’’ he said.
Mr Halsted said there was cause for optimism this year. The stabilising of energy prices had taken the sting out of inflation and the easing of interest rates would to some extent halt the migration of retailers’ profits to the finance institutions. “As we come out of the price freeze, these trends will help us to hold the ground we have made, but I believe it is up to us to play our part in making the price freeze work voluntarily.”
